Yeah, this is probably why I've had a difficult time reading any other romantic manga. The romance isn't what I'm accustomed to, nor what I enjoy. That makes it very difficult to relate to the stories and the heroines. My mother raised me on the belief that if any man tried to raise a hand to me, I was to take an iron skillet to him. Haven't had to do that, but I wouldn't hesitate. :-)

There's a certain amount of culture shock associated with reading stories written by authors from other countries (or parts of the country). I appreciate that reading a variety gives one a broader perspective, but in the end, I think we enjoy most those stories that we most relate to.

Sweetheart welcome to Japan, where boyfriends feel like they have a God-given right to abuse their girlfriends in some form or other. It's actually a milestone for a woman in a Japanese graphic romance like "Rainbow Smile" to stand up for herself and slap the good-for-nothing asstard "boyfriend" -- believe me, I've seen worse things. The manga of Japan reflect their cultural mores and backgrounds even more than their aspirations. It's just a shame that their society is so rigidly patriarchal.
