Yeah, this is probably why I've had a difficult time reading any other romantic manga. The romance isn't what I'm accustomed to, nor what I enjoy. That makes it very difficult to relate to the stories and the heroines. My mother raised me on the belief that if any man tried to raise a hand to me, I was to take an iron skillet to him. Haven't had to do that, but I wouldn't hesitate. :-)

There's a certain amount of culture shock associated with reading stories written by authors from other countries (or parts of the country). I appreciate that reading a variety gives one a broader perspective, but in the end, I think we enjoy most those stories that we most relate to.

Sweetheart welcome to Japan, where boyfriends feel like they have a God-given right to abuse their girlfriends in some form or other. It's actually a milestone for a woman in a Japanese graphic romance like "Rainbow Smile" to stand up for herself and slap the good-for-nothing asstard "boyfriend" -- believe me, I've seen worse things. The manga of Japan reflect their cultural mores and backgrounds even more than their aspirations. It's just a shame that their society is so rigidly patriarchal.

I would definitely recommend reading them in order. As the series has progressed, I've noticed more and more coming up about previous character's actions and history that might throw you for a loop since Cole doesn't spend a lot of time explaining what happened in previous books.

On the other hand, I can't imagine that it would make that much of a difference since I hadn't read the first story from Playing Easy to Get before I read the first book. I realized later that I might have enjoyed the scenes with Nikolai and Myst a little more in A Hunger Like No Other if I had, but it certainly didn't ruin it for me. It just kept my focus on the main characters for that book!

This sounds like a great book. I've heard good things about the Immortals After Dark series, but being new to the genre, I haven't picked any up as of yet. Should I read them in order, or does it matter?

One of my first experiences with paranormal erotica was Take Me There, by P.F. Kozak. If you haven't read it yet, it's a great book and the one that pretty much got me hooked.
